Tis the Season For Retail Theft

With the holiday season in full swing, it is important to keep these things in mind.

For many people, especially teenagers, retail theft doesn't seem like a big deal. It is
important to keep the following in mind and pass it on:

  • Retail Theft AttorneysRetail theft of over $150.00 is a FELONY offense where prison time is possible. A felony conviction remains on your record and must be reported to schools, employers etc. And it is not hard to reach $150.00 in merchandise these days.
  • Cameras are everywhere. And undercover security people are also posing as shoppers on the floor watching what the cameras may not see. Just because a video exists does not mean it is a clear depiction of the incident. Talk to an attorney who reviews all the evidence properly.
  • Switching tags or returning items you did not purchase is the same as taking them off the shelf and putting them under your coat and walking out the door. Letting a friend working the register undercharge you for items is still theft for both you and for them.
  • Depending on your prior criminal history, there may be ways to have charges amended to lesser charges or to receive theft school and keep the case off your record altogether. Talk with an attorney about your options.
