shutterstock_125245661On November 20, 2013, Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill allowing marriage equality in Illinois into law. Illinois became the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage. The law was to take effect statewide on June 1, 2014, but due to a ruling in Federal Court, marriage licenses for same-sex couples have been available at the Cook County Clerk’s office since February of this year. The Federal Court stated, “[t]here is no reason to delay further when no opposition has been presented to this Court and committed gay and lesbian couples have already suffered from the denial of their fundamental right to marry.” Illinois also recognizes same-sex marriages that took place in other states.

Prior to the new law, the only option available to same-sex couples was a civil union.
